Cerumen Removal

Ear Wax Removal

Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is normal and produced by the glands in the ears. It is present to both lubricate the ears and to keep out dust and debris.

Cerumen usually clears itself from the ears, but in some instances and people it can accumulate and cause a blockage. Some symptoms of a cerumen blockage are: earache, tinnitus, hearing loss and ear pressure.

Avoid cotton swabs in the ear canal. Often times cotton swabs will push the wax deeper into the ear causing an uncomfortable impaction that can be more difficult and uncomfortable to remove.

In office removal options

If the cerumen is not too deep, it can be removed by Heather in our Sonus Alexandria office. If it is determined that the wax is too deep, referral to a primary physician or Ear, Nose and Throat doctor will be required.

At home removal options

In some instances, an at home ear wax removal kit, such as debrox, is an appropriate method for wax removal. Ear wax removal kits can be purchased over the counter from most drug stores. The kit will include ear drops which will help to soften the wax as well as a syringe to irrigate the ear. It is important to follow the directions carefully and to be sure that a physician has approved this method for you before attempting it as some medical conditions are contraindicated for this method of removal. With any irrigation method, be sure that the water temperature is as close to body temperature as possible to avoid any dizziness or vertigo.
